Contemporary Connections: Art Making with Seniors Part 3

In late November, MAMC Completed Phase 3 of Contemporary Connections: Art Making With Seniors, our ongoing collaboration with The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery (TPP).

Participants responded to Miriam Cahn’s exhibit Me As Happening. The programme was delivered over eight sessions. For the first time since Contemporary Connections began, we were able to visit the Power Plant in person and what a joy it was to view artwork in a gallery setting !

MAMC worked concurrently with two groups of senior women at Parkdale Queen West Community Health Center (PQWCHC) and the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples (CSSP). The group of women at CSSP worked with Elena Soní and Denirée Isabel. This was an exciting opportunity for MAMC and TPP to reach out to the Spanish-speaking community in their first language. Vanessa Barnett and Carissa Campbell facilitated the project for the second group of women at the Parkdale Queen West site in English.

The Gallery kindly arranged for two docents to guide the viewing of Miriam Cahn’s work. Octavio led the Spanish-speaking women from CSSP, and Eric led the English-speaking participants from PQCHC.

These extremely vibrant women each brought their unique stories and experiences to the program and to our gallery visit. The conversations and artwork in response to Cahn’s work were powerful. Ranging from the insidiousness of the concept of female beauty; what it is to become an older woman; the use of sex and gender as a way to wield power; the danger of insularity in social groups and the crisis of displaced people fuelling xenophobia.
