“UNPACKING” is a new MAMC series that explores and interprets the words and visual imagery of a song or poem.
A palette of sepia and black tonalities invited participants to experiment with new drawing techniques using brown walnut ink, conté, charcoal, and chalk pastel.
Throughout the creative process, MAMC facilitators encouraged the group to select song lyrics or poetry as inspiration for their subject matter, and to explore new ways of representing their memories, cultural contexts, and geographies—reflecting on the histories we enact and the traces we leave behind.
The DPNCHC participants had previously requested a project to learn other drawing techniques. MAMC introduced the grid technique.
Over eight weeks, they studied the fundamental elements of drawing, including tonal gradation, mark-making, and textural rendering. Participants had to look at the photographs, observing details within each square of the grid that often escape the naked eye. This process encouraged them to slow down and intentionally build their images square by square through line, tone, and contrast.
Each page of the accordion book presented a new challenge. As participants learned to shade, layer, draw with a grid, and work on varied surfaces such as mylar, canvas, and organza, they developed confidence and refined their skills week by week.
A pair of hinged wooden frames became a box for the drawings created in their accordion books. Using a photo-transfer technique, participants collaged papers onto the exterior of the box, creating a tactile record of their creative journey.
Each participant expressed great pride in their accomplishments!
