Encounters with New Mothers

Young mothers and their babies ranging in age from two to ten months, clients of Parkdale Queen West Health Centre. Our face-to-face program was a welcome respite from  broken sleep and daily routines. Caregivers from the center entertained the infants while the mothers made art together in an adjoining space. Friendships evolved as each participant found kinship while creating their artwork. Some worked with a baby on their hip and a paintbrush in another hand. Our focus in the artwork was to invite the women to share their own stories of mothering, some of them without their husbands, due to immigration issues. They talked about the challenges, and their loneliness and, ultimately celebrated their resilience in the face of adversity.
