In the Winter of 2025, MAMC facilitators encountered a very special group of women talking. The panoply of accents and variations on the English language immersed us in the richness of different cultures and lived experiences. 

In our new project, Faces and Cultures of FHN, we set out on a journey of exploration through their migration stories, significant objects, places of memory, their given names, and their encounters with the English language, to discover a world of new experiences, challenges, and growth. We found the courage to face our fears, the freedom to create new narratives, and the strength to persevere when obstacles arose, the common thread amongst these formidable women.

Drawing inspiration from the ideas posed by Yaa Gyasi in her book “Home Going”,  MAMC encouraged conversations around: 

The body as archive, voice as lineage, grief and tenderness braided together, the quiet realisation that we are never singular. It says: home doesn’t stay behind—it relocates inside you. It suggests that leaving is not just a loss, but also continuity in disguise

The outcome has been a work of art representing the newfound freedom to wonder, the curiosity to learn more, and the wisdom gained from the journey itself.

Making Art Making Change is a non-profit charity committed to giving voice to individuals in a group setting within communities through the use of visual arts.

Our experienced artist educators are committed to creating a safe space and engaging projects where participants can explore artistic expression while developing self-awareness, collaboration skills and original creative thinking. Our focus is to facilitate dialogue and collaboration, thereby strengthening community bonds and reducing isolation.
