At the start of the 8-week project, MAMC took 12 The Stop Community Food Centre artists to the AGO with tickets sponsored by the AGO’s Community Access Programme. We saw Sarindar Dhaliwal's exhibition, “When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Namer Of Paint Colours." Dhaliwal’s work is characterized by intense colour and compelling imagery, Her artwork investigates memory, identity, and migration. For many in the group, it was their first visit to the art gallery.
Participants were shown work by Giuseppi Arcibaldo and Alexis Preller during the art-making sessions. They were encouraged to share memories of their childhoods revolving around culturally specific foods, ingredients, and brands. These joyful conversations led to wonderful, childhood memories of growing up in different parts of the world, eating fruit picked from trees and fish fresh from the Caribbean waters.
We introduced them to Idris Khan’s practice, which explores repetition's lyrical, symbolic, and physical meanings. The focus is on gestures that physically mark time, memory, loss, transformation, and ultimately, transcendence. Participants were fascinated by writing and overwriting, to create layers of meaning while focusing, and finding a place of calm.
When we were invited to lunch before one of our sessions Vanessa, Denise, and Elena witnessed firsthand - the amazing service The Stop offers their community, providing their members with a plentiful, nutritious meal once a day.
The participants were very thankful for the opportunity to participate in a MAMC project and hope to be part of a new one in the future!
Sincere thanks to Winsome, Neye, and Nicholas for all they did to support the programme
