Making Faces: A Programme at Community Place Hub

Clients of The Community Centre Hub, Weston Mt. Denis, Toronto, participated in the 2023 Spring/Summer program, “Making Faces” with Making Art Making Change.

Artistic Directors, Elena Soní and Vanessa Barnett offered a program that focused on different aspects of the self-portrait. The program was delivered in phases, so participants gradually built upon their skills and experiences, resulting in a deeper level of self-confidence. Each phase presented new challenges and opportunities for creative exploration, expanding the participants’ artistic abilities and the discovery of their unique expressive voices.

It’s been fascinating to observe how the participants’ weekly drawings and paintings reflected their growing confidence. Participants looked closely at the styles and interpretations of many contemporary and traditional artists who focus on portraiture,- finding interesting ways of approaching their work. Each participant enjoyed the challenge of experimenting with different techniques and exploring the possibilities of different approaches to portraiture using watercolor, acrylic, impasto, mixed media, and collage. Each artist's series of portraits celebrated experimentation, risk-taking, and surprises as well as the pleasure of sharing their accomplishments.

With an emphasis on community-building the program encouraged social interaction and collaboration among participants. This aspect of the program enhances the overall experience by fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Participants had the opportunity to show their work, provide feedback to others, and engage in creative activities that promoted mutual support and encouragement.
