“Language, Identity, Place, and Home: these are all of a piece- just different elements of belonging and not belonging” Jhumpa Lahiri
The project with the Davenport Perth Seniors was a journey over eight weeks combining painting, images, embroidery, drawings, and impressions that were layered inside their 6-page accordion book.
Each participant received a beautifully packaged box of artist-quality materials to use during the eight sessions and then take home after the project.
During these sessions, participants explored different materials and techniques as they developed their artwork. The focus each week was on a different aspect of the book, including self-portraits created with fabric and stitching; A view through the window; A place of memory and
A significant object.
The books reflect a deep engagement with materials, self-reflection, and discussion stimulated by many images of artists' work and poetry to inspire new ideas and ways of thinking about their relationship with the creative process through drawing, painting, and stitching to establish a sense of self.
