New Beginnings
An Adventure in Art

MAMC facilitators had the pleasure of a new partnership with Cecil Street Community Centre.

The enthusiastic participants each received a carefully packaged box of artist-quality materials to use throughout the eight sessions.

Each week, participants focused on a page of their accordion art journal, exploring the varied materials and techniques to represent self-portraits, a significant object, neighbourhood images, and dual language self-reflections.

The project was greatly enhanced with the assistance of  Chinese-English speaking community members. Our time together culminated in a dual-language celebration, where each participant shared their book with invited community guests.

At the heart of the Cecil Street Community Centre’s  New Beginnings Project is its success at community building and peer support: “This wonderful program opened my eyes. I expanded my ideas about art, which allowed me to have conversations with my family… I became a teacher and a learner in my community, and it made me feel very good and proud to continue developing my skills. Creating art in a supportive community fosters a sense of belonging and makes us all feel valued.”  Project Participant
