Nadie Me Quita Lo Bailado
A Project with MOCA 2023

MAMC was invited by MOCA to design and deliver an outreach project for seniors. Participants would respond to Liz Magor, Phyllida Barlow, and the Wedge collection.
Kenneth Montague began his collection: The Wedge, to gather the work of artists from the
African Diaspora. He has since introduced artists and this dynamic body of work to the public.
MAMC’s research of The Wedge Collector, Magor, and Barlow, suggests that the common
denominator among the three exhibits is the validation of lives lived on the edges, - this is also
true when looking at discarded materials that are repurposed and given a new narrative as
Barlow and Magor have done.

MAMC chose to call the project “Nadie Me Quita Lo Bailado" (No one can take away all the times I danced). In Latin America, this is a saying used to remind oneself of a life lived to the fullest.

MAMC partnered with The Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Community Centre Seniors
Services. 12 participants were given the challenge of finding a visual vocabulary using
discarded materials for their creative process.  Older people often become invisible, yet in their stories, rich layers of experience are revealed.

In their art, they have recreated memories of making toys from leftover things, of moments of
joy, of life being a hopeful journey and descending from the Andean peaks to build a new life by standing tall.

The Work will be shown at MOCA from January 16 th , 2024, to January 28 th , 2024, inviting the public to be part of the dialogue.
