Inspiring Transformation

INSPIRING TRANSFORMATION

Inspiring Transformation is MAMC’s first partnership with “The West Active Living and Learning Centre (WALLC) dedicated to promoting growth and wellness in a safe and welcoming environment that embraces the diversity of our community.” WALLC offers a variety of activities to help connect older adults with their peers and with opportunities for fitness, education, community development, social connections, and more.

MAMC’s  8-weekly sessions successfully inspired transformation in a group of wise, resilient senior women of Portuguese, Vietnamese, American, and Central American backgrounds. They spoke of their challenges as immigrants, the dislocations of leaving their place of birth to start a new life in a new language.

Provocations of place, memory, and belonging are milestones at the core of everyone’s lived experience. The artwork became a way of sharing and making new connections as they created each new page in their accordion books.

Thank you to Joshua Bowyer, and Beatriz Vas Gomez of WNH for their support and enthusiasm for the project.

In the words of the participants.
“I don’t believe this work is mine, but it is mine and I love it.” Irene

“I haven’t taken any art classes in years, I have Parkinson’s Disease, my fingers are frozen but low and behold, I can paint - It’s a different part of the brain!” - Bonnie

"The 'Inspiring Transformations' project was a truly enriching experience.  Watching our Seniors grow each week in their confidence, ideas, and efforts made this project a resounding success. We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Elena and Vanessa and look forward to seeing the continued positive impact their efforts have on communities across the city."
