This project marks MAMC’s fourth collaboration with the Toronto Neighbourhood Organization (TNO).
MAMC designed “Woman Make Your Mark” to highlight women's power and contributions to strengthening their families and the community. MAMC was very ambitious in designing the project format. We trusted that women who faced migration, the loss of family, and their home countries and had to build a new life in Canada would step up to the challenge. - They certainly did!
We used the work of Filipino artist Pacita Abad as the inspiration for this mixed-media exploration. Abad’s use of trapunto and her colour palette inspired the 48 women, although some were initially somewhat hesitant to try the techniques MAMC was introducing.
Guided by MAMC facilitators, the participants were encouraged to take risks and leave behind preconceived ideas about what art looks like. As the project progressed they began to see themselves as artists.
Each finished work is a celebration of the courage and determination of these women to leave their mark. The stories each woman integrated into the artwork are a testament to their resilience, triumphs in the face of adversity, and joy at having achieved so much.
The artwork exemplifies how MAMC’s approach helps participants reach their best and truly feel that they are artists. The atmosphere of bonhomie in the group created new bonds and strengthened existing ones. MAMC sense of accomplishment and admiration for our participants cannot be expressed in words.
The project culminated with a field trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario to see the Pacita Abad exhibition. It was a magnificent end to a very rewarding experience for all concerned.
MAMC thanks the TNO team, who were so generous, enthusiastic, and supportive of the work each woman has created.
